February 1st   7:00 PM  DFA Meetup in Valentine 206, Lutheran Seminary
To frack or not to frack: DFA to hear assessment of threat to water supplies

The water supplies of the entire eastern half of Pennsylvania might be threatened by projects like the Marcellus Shale project, according to the speaker for the Gettysburg Area Democracy for America (DFA).

Nathan Sooy, campaign coordinator for Clean Water Action in Harrisburg, will speak to DFA Wednesday February 1st on Fracking: the Big Picture. He says he works to educate citizens as well as elected officials on the importance of protecting our water supply.

Pennsylvanians get their drinking water from our state's more than 83,000 miles of waterways, acres of lakes, reservoirs and wetlands, and a natural system of underground aquifers. Many of these vital water sources have been contaminated or are at risk of contamination, yet our waterways receive no special protection from pollution and polluting activities in Pennsylvania, according to Clean Water Action.

Fracking earned mention from President Obama in his Jan. 24 State of the Union.  “Obama’s position was that we need to maximize domestic energy supplies, but we must make certain that our explorations do not endanger the environment or our citizens,” said Elaine Jones, chair of the DFA group in Adams County. “Opinions differ on the dangers of fracking in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale, and while Governor Corbett is anxious to attract drillers to our state, the Pennsylvania legislature cannot agree on impact fees or effective ways to regulate the drilling industry.”

Sooy says protecting our water, air, and families requires attention to the dynamics of political power as well as the technical details of environmental regulation.  He has decades of experience in grassroots organizing in five states.  Sooy founded GAS TRUTH of Central PA which was created to educate, agitate, and organize to protect PA from Shale Gas drilling.

Come and join the debate!  The public is invited. For more information, contact Elaine Jones at elainelynchjones@gmail.org or Peter Boving at boving@juno.com

What a Day!  It snowed, but we still had 65 people join us on the Square in Gettysburg  on January 21st to protest the Citizens United V. FEC ruling.

We gathered with creative signs to voice our protest the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in 2010 recognizing corporations as persons.    Lou Hammann used a bullhorn to lead us in a "Declaration of Independence from Corporate Rule.
