Task Forces
DFA issue Task Forces are formed when there is broad support from Gettysburg Area DFA members in favor of an initiative and enough individuals willing to devote time to the project. Any member may suggest a new task force to the Steering Committee, which will be formed when there is both an organizer and demonstration of support.
Our active Task Forces are:
Energy, Environment, and Sustainability - Peter Boving, chair boving@juno.com
Started in 2008, this task force became active in coordinating a community day of action to demand a reduction to 350 ppm CO2 as the standard for international treaties. In 2010 we installed a solar hot water system on a local home through the “Solar Energy Raising” initiative, promoted awareness of electric vehicles and alternative transportation, visited a wind farm, and provided a seminar series on starting a kitchen garden. The Task Force has promoted energy-climate awareness at DFA Meetups, at the Adams County Heritage Festival and "Energy and You" seminars at Wilson College. The group meets monthly on the second Wednesday at 6:30 at the Gettysburg Library Community room at 227 W. High Street in Gettysburg.
2011 Accomplishments:
Adams/Hanover Health Care 4 All PA - Will Lane, chair wlane@gettysburg.edu
Adams/Hanover Health Care 4 All PA is a nonpartisan community project of Gettysburg Area Democracy for America. We believe access to health care is a human right that is recognized as such in every industrialized democracy except our own. We also believe that based on the experience of other democracies around the world, we can provide comprehensive, accessible care to all and save money, too, with a public, nonprofit approach to funding health care!
Pennsylvania can lead the way on health care reform with the Family and Business Health Security Act, (SB 500, HB 1660,) a bill that can save Pennsylvanians money while providing access to quality, comprehensive care to all residents. To join our effort or simply to learn more about our group or the state bill write to wlane@gettysburg.edu.

Transition Study Group - coordinated by Joe Breighner, Will Lane and Peter Boving
The Transition movement arose several years ago in Ireland to address peak oil and climate change by working to build resilient communities grounded in local resources and responding to local initiatives and ideas for projects. Since then, the movement has spread around the world and across the United States. DFA began a study group to see what the Transition movement offers Adams County. We began by reading Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future by Bill McKibben. For details contact Will Lane or visit http://www.transitionnetwork.org/initiatives/gettysburg-pa-usa

Money in Politics Elaine Jones, chair –
The purpose of our group, Money in Politics, is to highlight and challenge the corrupting influence of money, especially corporate contributions, into politics, elections, and governing. Since we began meeting in early 2011, we have held demonstrations and sponsored programs to educate local citizens about the interconnection between corporate lobbying, campaign contributions, and its impact on legislation as well as elections.
In April we inspired a visit from former Congressman Bob Edgar to address a packed auditorium at Gettysburg College on “Reclaiming Democracy: A Discussion About Money and Politics.” Edgar is now President of Common Cause.
On tax day, we attracted significant local press to our demonstration on Lincoln Square in Gettysburg with signs decrying “ WE PAY TAXES, WHY DON’T CORPORATIONS?”
Our display at the September Heritage Festival described the increase in corporate advertising and campaign expenditures since the Supreme Court decision in January 2010 "Citizens United vs. the FEC." That decision gave corporations the right to personhood and allowed unlimited electoral spending without disclosing the source of the ads or other campaign efforts. We gathered four pages of signatures supporting a constitutional amendment to reverse that decision.
Our task force has worked with Common Cause, Public Citizen, Move to Amend, and other national groups working to expose the influence of Money in Politics. Of particular interest is finding out how much power ALEC, the conservative think tank, has by writing bills that will be introduced in the Pennsylvania legislature. And who funds ALEC? We know the Koch brothers have funded it since its founding, but the depth of corporate support is very instructive. To see funding sources and the impact ALEC has across the country visit www.ALECexposed.com.
We are closely following the Occupy Movement so that we can lend support to actions that dovetail with our goals. We work to show the connection between the inability to achieve Universal Healthcare and the profit makers of the healthcare industry, as well as the polluters who undermine attempts to curb fossil fuels or deter climate change.
On January 21, 2012, we participated in a nationwide protest on the second anniversary of Citizens United v. FEC by holding a demonstration on Lincoln Square in Gettysburg, PA. Over sixty people showed up in the snow carrying creative signs like “I Refuse to Believe Corporations are Persons until Texas Executes One.” We engaged in an Occupy style chant on the “Declaration of Independence from Corporate Rule” led by Lou Hammann that inspired a front page picture in the Gettysburg Times on Jan 23.
The Money in Politics task force meets monthly, usually the last Sunday of the month at 3:00 at the home of Elaine Jones. To join our public information campaign, contact Elaine at 717-677-9442 or write to elainelynchjones@gmail.com.
